An introduction to glr.com and why it hasn't been updated in two years.
That question was asked of me recently by a Wall Street Journal reporter.
The following is more or less my answer for her.

The short answer is that it is because I believe the concepts I have
attempted to present are still valid (even if my presentation is out
dated, or poor). Taking the site down would eliminate any presentation
of my ideas and make it more difficult to give it a "facelift" in the
future.

The long answer would include...

The concepts I have attempted to present include the following:

1) The importance of the privacy issues becomes more clear to many when
they see it in a "hand-ons" manner, rather than an abstract debate. ie:
shifting ones thoughts from "I've done nothing wrong; I have nothing to hide,"
to the larger picture that privacy can impact significantly upon those who
"have nothing to hide."

2) Not to disregard security issues, however, when privacy is respected
and unnecessary information is NOT collected, there is no need to protect
that which one doesn't have.

2a) ie: by stopping their use of individuals SSNs in the resume system
at the Michigan Employement Security Commission they have no future worries
about protecting the data from intentional or accidential disclosure.

2a) ie: by continuing to use SSNs as military id numbers, the DoD,
Indiana University, etc have onoging issues related to the security of
that information from intentional or accidential disclosure.

In all these cases one could seriously question the usefulness of using
the individuals SSN. Do resume writers benefit? Do military personally
benefit? Do university students benefit? (use of a SSN for financial matters at
the unversity is one thing; as a general student identifier another
althogether).

3) The overall concept of who, why, and what information "they" collect
and for what current and future use will that information be put. That is
the essence of the privacy issue. The answers are not easily seen:

We fill out a form and provide information with little thought to WHO is
COLLECTING it, WHY they are COLLECTING it, and utlimately where/how it
will be DISTIRBUTED. We provide the information to obtain some benefit:
drivers license, military id, credit card, mortgage, supermarket savings
card, telephone service, library card, etc. We never see the other side.

All of the above are things I have attempted to demonstrate with my
website. Although I have indicated to you that a significant amount of
the feedback I've received relates to those who wish to locate
information, I hope others have gotten and still get my intended message.
In reflection maybe those who are "seeking help" are more likely to
contact me than those who may have gained some understanding of the
concepts I've tried to present.

I think at this point my site probably lacks any context; ie: it's hasn't
been updated in sometime and is just out there. Your question is very
good and probably asked by many who look at my site. I plan to add my
answer to my home page to bring it into prespective and hopefully
encourage feedback that would be helpful for a future "face-lift."
